Two Shows at TCAF

There are two Carousels at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend:  one for kids and one for adults.  Details below.

Saturday, May 7, at 4 pm

Carousel for Kids! Cartoon slide shows by Dave Roman, Raina Telgemeier, Colleen AF Venable, and host R. Sikoryak.

Toronto Reference Library, 2nd Floor, in The Appel Salon–Novella Room.

The creators will read their work with music, sound effects, and audience participation!  Plus a 3D comic presentation!  (With glasses, of course.)

Sunday, May 8, at 4:10 pm

Carousel (for Adults). Cartoon slide shows by Kate Beaton, Jess Fink, Jason Little, Jeffrey Lewis, and host R. Sikoryak.

The Pilot Tavern, 22 Cumberland Street (Across the street from Toronto Reference Library).

R. Sikoryak’s long-running series comes to TCAF, featuring live readings and music.

SAW benefit comics reading

Cartoonist (and Carouseler) Tom Hart has been organizing his own comics slide show series at the KGB Bar for years.  On April 24, he’s hosting a benefit Easter Reading for SAW, The Sequential Artists Workshop, a new school for cartooning in Gainesville, Florida.

The show will feature Dean Haspiel and Daniel J Kramer, John Kerschbaum, Lizz Hickey, Josh Bayer, Domitille Collardey, Leela Corman, Seth Kushner and readers, Sam Henderson, Leslie Stein, Martha Keavney, and Stephanie Mannheim.   Details below.

March 21 show at Parsons

The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center presents
CAROUSEL
Cartoon slide shows and other projected pictures.

Featuring: Gabrielle Bell, Jason Little, Matthew Thurber, and Lauren R. Weinstein. Hosted by R. Sikoryak and Bill Kartalopoulos.

A special edition of the Carousel multimedia show at Parsons, in conjunction with the Cartoon Polymaths exhibition, curated by Bill Kartalopoulos. A bevy of cartoonists will read from their work and discuss the relationship between comics and performance.

New York’s great Strand Book Store has frequently featured cartoonists reading their work – including Carousel stalwarts such as Michael Kupperman, Kim Deitch, and Tim Kreider.  Their presentations and many, many more can be seen here.

On the release of their Drawn & Quarterly books in 2009, R.O. Blechman and R. Sikoryak spoke as well.  Their 5-part talk can be found here.
