“Comic New York: A Symposium” Videos

On March 24 and 25, the Comic New York Symposium brought together creators and academics to discuss the intertwined histories of American comics and the town where they were born: New York City.

Many Carousel artists participated, including Emily Flake, Dean Haspiel, Ben Katchor, R. Sikoryak, Lauren R. Weinstein, and Julia Wertz.

Videos of all the presentations can be seen here.

Pictures and Performance: A Melodrama

A special satellite performance of the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival, organized by Bill Kartalopoulos:

Are static, two dimensional picture sequences and live, three dimensional performance pieces irreconcilable media, or are they actually star-crossed lovers, desperately longing for a reunion following centuries of tragic separation?

Join us for a special afternoon of mixed-media pieces by Peter Burr, Juliacks, Bill Kartalopoulos, Ben Katchor, Shana Moulton, R. Sikoryak and Matthew Thurber, presented in a framework suggested by Josef Franz van Goez’s Lenardo und Blandine, an 18th century German melodrama that was visually transcribed to create — the first graphic novel?

Sunday, December 4 at 3 pm at The Brick Theater, 575 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222.

Comics and Performance at ICAF 2011

This week, the International Comics Arts Forum comes to the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, VT. ICAF 2011 features three days of insightful lectures, discussion and presentations exploring a wide range of topics, from American comic strips to East Asian comics. The conference is free; more info here.

On Friday, R. Sikoryak and Bill Kartalopoulos will discuss “Comics and Performance.” Kartalopoulos will trace some historical relationships between comics and theater, and Sikoryak will discuss the relation between comics and performance as he has experienced and facilitated it, through Carousel and other projects.
